Manage OBS [Facilitator Guide]

For this guide, it is assumed that the pre-configurations have been completed by an Event Organiser. If this is not the case, please refer to the Event Organiser Guide.

As the Session Facilitator, you are responsible for configuring the behind the scenes settings. Moderate and manage the session to ensure everything runs smoothly during the event. You will need to:

  1. Configure OBS to link with MUX
  2. Setup Scenes for Live Streaming
  3. Coordinate with the speakers on the live stream schedule 
  4. Control and coordinate live streaming during an even 
  5. Facilitate Interactive Sessions and control the Interactive Sessions Display Screen
  6. Manage speakers in sessions


Configure Broadcasting Software OBS

OBS acts as our Broadcasting Software and needs to be linked to MUX, our Distribution Platform. OBS requires the RTMP URL and the Stream Key from MUX to enable live streaming. These would be provided by the Event Organiser.

To Configure OBS Studio

  1. Launch OBS Studio
  2. Click Settings on the bottom right and then select Stream under the menu items
  3. Paste the RTMP URL from distribution platform (MUX) into the Server field
    1. This would be provided by the Event Organiser
  4. Paste the Stream key from the distribution platform into the Stream key field
    1. This would be provided by the Event OrganiserOBS_Stream_setting.png
  5. Click Apply and OK

This establishes the connection between OBS and the distribution platform MUX


Setting up a Scene for Live Streaming

Broadcasting Software can be used as a tool to set up the scene for your presentation.There are external documents and video presentations on setting up the Scene and sources on broadcasting software. 

The steps below illustrate a basic scene setup for OBS with PPT and Webcam as sources

  1. Once the setting has been updated with the MUX details, create a scene for live streaming
  2. Click the ‘+’ within the Scenes panel in the bottom left 
  3. Give the scene an appropriate name.
  4. We can add sources for the scene
  5. Source can be anything that needs to be visible during the streaming
  6. To add a PowerPoint presentation and Webcam stream
    1. Keep the PPT that needs to be presented open 
    2. In the source panel click the ‘+’ to add a source to the scene
    3. Select Windows Capture to add PowerPoint as a source
      1. Note: The PPT needs to open to be displayed in the available windows capture list
    4. Click on the drop-down list next to label Windows
    5. Select the PPT that needs to be displayed from the list
    6. Click OK
    7. In the source panel click ‘+’ to add Webcam as source
    8. Click Video Capture Device and give a suitable name 
    9. Click OK
    10. Video Capture Properties screen is displayed
    11. Select the appropriate device from the devices list
    12. Click OK


Start Streaming

Ensure that the platforms are linked and the broadcasting software is configured with necessary settings to live stream the session. 

The Session Facilitator can handle the control panel to moderate the Interactive Session features. Once the Session Facilitator is ready the session can be made live to enable the attendees to view the session through the web app.

The presenter can start streaming from the Broadcasting application which will display the live stream panel within the Interactive Session screen on the web app.  

  1. Click on the Start Streaming button in OBS.
  2. Scene selected on the broadcasting software will be streamed through the embedded video within the Interactive Session web app screen.
